about

TAPE DOCTOR. 30 minutes of hypnagogic pop and hard disco. began as "no singing" sound collages & experiments i'd been recording casually in my bedroom on an old 2-track TEAC 1230 reel-to-reel that an old friend rescued out of a firepit in gainesville, ga. washing machines mixed with dirtbikes, drum patterns mixed with spoken word.

there were a series of performances across 2017 year where i brought that 2-track reel of tape to shows and played along with the collages, or over them, often manipulating the speed/motion of the tape reel manually as a DJ would with vinyl. soon realized the same reel of 1/4" inch tape also fit on my 8-track Tascam 388 recorder. before too long, the material swelled past the initial experiments & demonstrations got layered into full songs using the 6 additional tracks alotted by the 388.

there's a lot of deterioration conveyed in the music - decay & loss, reckoning & redemption. i had just stopped a whirlwind period of touring the very first mothers record and had starting living in an isolated spot by a pond in rural winterville, ga to try and recuperate & sort out the future! compatriot Jake Flowers called it Ugly Pop which i think is on point.
