first collection of instrumental pieces, all composed and performed (in most cases improvised) on acoustic guitar between 2015-2020.

the first of these was "Passages (outwardly)" - implying a kind of outward fractal-ization from a central melodic idea - included on the first Civils release Young But Ugly. i've been including one or two of these semi-improvised instrumental meditiations ("passages:") on each Civils release since. this is a compilation of those pieces.

inspired by the fingerpicking of justin townes earle, elizabeth cotton, washington phillips, mississippi john hurt, townes van zandt, as well as the melodic styles of bill monroe, beefheart, and nick drake.

everything performed & recorded by drew kirby on tascam 388 and 424 magnetic tape as well as occasional iphone voice memo in georgia! except "needs + wants" recorded on the back patio of Elsewhere in Brooklyn, NY while a truck was backing up. mixed (or not) in protools. thanks to dylan diener @wuog for encouraging me with the original passages (outwardly) recording.
