this is the first day it hasn't rained in atlanta in 4 months. this is a collection of powerlite pop songs about the alchemy of hunk-dom, getting reacquainted with heartache after a period of isolation, losing weight, new rooms, shooting your shot, the power of a reach (4 months?) and the way loss & growth beget one another. Inspired by The Supremes & George Jones, soft rockers Todd Rundgren, CSNY & Carol King as well as more contemporary pop-skewering writers like Holy Shit, Cate Le Bon & Chris Weisman.

the most "traditional" or conventionally-minded Civils tape since 2016's Hothouse Flowers (which features the original "ARIELLE", a song that appears here twice): lots of acoustic guitar & tambourine & other things I'd sworn off in favor of darker sticky murk - this one's like a lite breeze or quilt.

there's still "HUNK ALIGNMENT" a duet of guitar improvisations interpreting 2 interlocking themes, with lyrics ruminating on masculinity & autonomy ("Robert Redford/Steve McQueen/ and James Dean..."), -- "BOTTLE OPTICS" similarly composed in real time, lyrics and all, speaking on habit & projection - finally closing with "HARBINGER", another cluster of guitar sound collages & tape manipulations - hopefully enough oddities strewn about as a tonic to the saccharine!

recorded in winterville, ga and completed in grant park, atl on 4-track cassette and 8-track reel-to-reel 1/4" tape via Tascam 424 and 388 respectively. about half of the tracks were live-mixed stereo to Teac 1230 2-track 1/4" tape and about half were mixed in protools.
